Marriage Equality

Libertarians do not believe it is the government's job to define marriage, however, as long the government is in the marriage business the law should not favor one group over another. Libertarians believe in marriage equality between consenting adults.

Marriage is a social and legal contract between consenting adults. We support the rights of individuals to enter freely into any mutually beneficial contract without government interference.

The Libertarian Party also supports equality before the law. To that end, neither race, sexual orientation, preference, gender, nor gender identity should have any impact on the government's treatment of individuals, such as in child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws. The government does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships. Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships.

Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no impact on the government's treatment of individuals, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws. Government does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships. Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships.

Marriage is a contract between consenting adults and should not include a gov't employee as referee, cheerleader or judge. We support the rights of individuals to enter freely into any contract, as long as both consenting adults.
